Alumni of the program and former mayor of the city of Hawthorne, Chris Brown, came by one of the DLO’s Kwanzaa forums. He spoke as well as two of his colleagues that he brought to meet and interact with students. Students were excited to hear his story.
A student mentioned that being able to see someone that had also went to the same school who had reached such a high position at a very young age was inspiring. Chris talked both the challenges and high points that came with seeking public office and how he was inspired to try for a goal that seemed daunting at the time.
His story: Chris Brown is an American former politician in the State of California. On November 5, 2013, Brown became the youngest mayor of the City of Hawthorne and the first African American mayor in the city’s 91-year history.
